Jan Roberts, DSW, LCSW is a recognized leader and clinician in the field of mental health, including novel medical treatments such as cannabis. Dr. Roberts is a licensed clinical social worker whose commitment to the social work ethic of advocacy led her to create Madison Square Partners (MSP), a private equity firm focused on providing novel healthcare solutions to global populations.
In her past experience, Dr. Roberts founded one of the largest multi-site mental health and wellness practices in the mid-Atlantic region in the United States, Partners in Health and Wellbeing. Dr. Roberts became interested in cannabis’ effects after seeing how cannabis was helpful in improving the lives of some of her clients who had experienced little help from traditional medications. After seeing her own cases improve, Dr. Roberts embarked on a path to further her understanding of cannabis and its impact on mental health and wellbeing, and to provide objective information and advocate for its healthy use.
Dr. Roberts currently teaches at NYU Silver School of Social Work where she teaches graduate-level courses in human development, psychopathology, and cognitive behavioral therapy. She also serves as the Faculty Advisor for NYU’s CannaHealth Student Group and a clinical supervisor for MSW interns. Her clinical interests are cannabis and its impact on trauma, eating disorders, and other mood disorders; she also is an advocate of challenging the current DSM’s sole focus on substances rather than the maladaptive behaviors that are involved with substance use disorder.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Roberts co-founded the International Research Center on Cannabis and Health (IRCCH) in 2017, which served as a collaborative research institute providing consultation and support to university and community-based projects across the globe on cannabis and health. At NYU, Dr. Roberts has conducted research on cannabis and professional athletes and clinicians’ knowledge and bias about cannabis. To focus on more macro issues, Dr. Roberts founded Madison Square Partners to create novel healthcare interventions for populations that are medically underserved especially focusing on women’s health issues, wellness practices, and the therapeutic use of cannabis. MSP recently launched The Cannabinoid Institute, an educational institute focused on providing CME/CE accredited education to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and mental health practitioners across the globe.
Prior to her move to New York City, Dr. Roberts was selected by Governor John Carney of Delaware to serve as a member of the DE Medical Marijuana Advisory Board where she brought her medical cannabis expertise in the designing, implementation and improvement of Delaware’s medical marijuana regulatory regime.
Dr. Roberts lives in New York City and still sees patients at her private practice and has launched Cannabis for Health and Wellbeing in Manhattan.
